If you plan to travel around the Midwest this year, check out some of the best Christmas cities to visit during the holidays and plan to visit at least one!

Best Christmas Towns in Illinois
Chicago, Illinois– There is always something fun to do in Chicago. One of Chicago’s iconic holiday-season attractions is the Macy’s State Street display.
“Recognized as a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Macy’s State Street is a Macy’s flagship destination and a true American original.
Join generations of Chicagoans as you shop and dine through this historic building filled with the best in fashion, cuisine, and more.”
This is on our bucket list this year, and it’s a great way to discover other fun things to do during the Christmas season in Chicago.
Other things to do in Chicago during the holiday season:
Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, IL. Visit chicagobotonic.org for more information and updates.
Another Illinois town to check out is Galena Country.
It’s a cozy area filled with Christmas ideas, such as the Holiday Fire in the Sky, visiting the Christmas Village, and taking a stroll downtown to take in the holiday scenery.

Christmas country in Indiana
Santa Claus, Indiana- We explored Santa Claus, Indiana, for the first time a few years ago.
You know they are pulling out all the stops on Christmas activities with a town named after Santa Claus.
This small town celebrates Christmas year-round, drawing millions of visitors to its family-friendly theme park, Holiday World, and events at Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort.
Some Christmas activities include the Land of Lights display, a Christmas dinner hosted by Santa himself, a live Reindeer exhibit, and a Santa Claus Christmas parade.
You can find plenty to do in the Santa Claus area during the holidays; visit their page to learn more.

Best Christmas Towns in Michigan
Frankenmuth, Michigan – I remember the first time I went to Bronner’s in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
That store overwhelmed me. It was so hard to take it all in at once. It was Christmas overload, but in a good way.

Bronner’s is known as the BEST Christmas store.
They bring in guests from all over the world, and you don’t leave empty-handed. But Bronner’s isn’t the only thing this quaint little town is known for—the whole town transforms into a Christmas town.
Do you remember growing up watching A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens?
Well, this is a real-life version of it. The streets are decorated to the max, shop windows are covered in holiday decor, and you will find actors dressed up in Dickens-Day apparel singing Christmas carols and wishing you holiday greetings.
The air smells of fudge and roasted chestnuts.

Manistee, Michigan- Last year, when I searched for holiday activities in the Mid-Michigan area, I was told about Manistee.
For a nostalgic Christmas, head to Manistee.
They kick off the holiday season with the Old Christmas Weekend, filled with activities, including a Gingerbread House contest, Festival of Trees, and guided tours of the Babcock House.
You will find carolers decked out in period dresses, coats, and, let’s not forget, the top hats!
There’s also a Victorian Sleighbell Parade, with the highlight being Belgian draft horses pulling a 30′ Christmas tree down River Street in downtown Manistee.
Please visit their website for a list of activities and dates. (F r 2026, activities will kick off on 12/04/2026-12/07/2026).
Grand Rapids, Michigan– You may not think of this Michigan city as a magical Christmas place, but it is.
With a Christmas Open House, a decked-out Rosa Parks Circle (which also offers ice skating), and performances of The Nutcracker, A Christmas Story, and Holiday Pops by the Grand Rapids Symphony, you’ll be in the holiday spirit.
And just down the road is the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s “Christmas and holiday traditions around the world.”
Dearborn, Michigan- Another great place in Michigan to visit during the holiday season is Dearborn.
Not far from Detroit (where you should stop at the zoo to see all the holiday lights), Dearborn offers an outdoor living history museum during the holidays.
During the Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village, you will find actors dressed in period clothing, carriage and Model T rides, Santa and his reindeer, ice-skating, and caroling. Th y also host a variety of traditions and tastes of holidays past; they’ll roast chestnuts and build bonfires.
As a lifelong Michigander, I will be checking this one off my list this year (finally).

Visitors looking to add a little merriment to their Christmas can flock to the City of Christmas Display of Lights at Rand Park.
This massive light display in Keokuk, Iowa, features over a million lights across 100 displays and draws huge holiday crowds. The event opens around Thanksgiving and typically runs until a few days after Christmas.
Visit SSanta’s Workshop, interact with elves and reindeer, and start the holiday season off right. Ke kuk is near Fort Madison and sits along the Mississippi and Des Moines Rivers. You’ll find Lee Mars, home to The Pioneer Village Christmas Wonderland on the other side of Iowa—what better way to ring in Christmas than with a horse-drawn sleigh ride?
The winter wonderland also features a live-action nativity and live performances. If you’re for ice cream in the winter, consider visiting the Ice Cream Capital of the World Visitor Center.

Best Christmas Towns in Kansas
Located midway between Kansas City and Denver, Wakeeny, Kansas, epitomizes small-town America. Wa eeny is home to several historical sites, the Shiloh Vineyard and Winery, and the Smoky Valley Scenic Byway.
It’s also a popular Christmas town in the Midwest. Christmas City of the High Plains is an adventure for the whole family. You’ll enjoy virtual reality sleigh rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, encounters with live reindeer, Christmas tree lighting in a quaintly decorated downtown area, visits, and a parade with Santa. Ch istmas City of the Plains is a fun, family-friendly Thanksgiving weekend event.
You’ve likely heard the saying, “Get the heck out of Dodge,” “butduring the holidays, you will want to head into Christmas in Dodge City, Kansas.
Whether yoyou’ren town for sightseeing or exploring the casinos, visiting during the holidays puts you in the center of the action. Visitors can stroll the old-timey streets and enjoy holiday concerts, a tree-lighting ceremony, and visits with Santa.
All of these are set against the backdrop of the old frontier. You’ll feel like you’re in the middle of a Gunsmoke episode.
Best Christmas Towns in South Dakota
Rapid City, South Dakota, is the perfect Christmas town in the Midwest.
Home to the Storybook Island Christmas Nights of Light, visitors can enjoy holiday cheer amid shopping, dining, and attractions.
Visit the Christmas Village Store or shop for that perfect gift at the Winter Market. Guests can also visit Main Street Square for ice skating and visits with Santa.
Rapid City, South Dakota, near Black Hills National Forest, offers stunning landscape views from every angle and an array of culinary and historical experiences for foodies and history buffs alike.
Walk in a Winter Wonderland at Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at this yearly event featuring over 25 miles of string lights and beautifully decorated shops and restaurants along Falls Park.
Enjoy the lights among the waterfalls and rock faces of this stunning Big Sioux River park. Visitors can enjoy live music in a warm overlook area, a delicious, warming chili bar, adult beverages for the grown-ups, and treats and ice cream for the kids.
Best Christmas Towns in North Dakota
Fargo, North Dakota, features a bustling downtown with dining, shopping, and year-round activities.
Still, during the holidays, the town transforms into a Christmas wonderland. The yearly Parade of Light takes visitors through the decorated downtown area, while a drive-through light display at Lindenwood Park from the cozy warmth of your car delights all ages.

Best Christmas Towns in Ohio
Wooster, Ohio- I fell in love with Wooster, Ohio, last year on a press trip. A huge attraction that draws in a ton of visitors each year is the Pine Tree Barn.
This restored Dutch bank barn features over 25,000 square feet of furniture, home decor, and all things Christmas.
This family-owned shop and restaurant started selling Christmas trees in the early 1960s.

Over the years, they have expanded into a full-service shop, treating customers to hot cocoa while they pick out trees, then sending them to the store and restaurant for gifts and pastries.
After an afternoon at The Pine Tree Barn, explore downtown Wooster, where you will find one of its main Christmas attractions: the Wooster Window Wonderland.
Windows along Main Street are decked out to represent times of the past, and from what I’ve been told, it’s a sight you have to see for yourself.
You can explore each storefront window with a cup of hot cocoa and other Christmas activities to kick off the Christmas season.

Kirtland, Ohio- One more area in Ohio I have to mention is the Kirtland Nativity Exhibit. “Unto Us, A Son is Given,” the annual Historic Kirtland Nativity Exhibit featuring more than 600 lovingly loaned nativity scenes, 100,000 outdoor lights, and sacred Christmas music, opens November 27 at the HistorNovember 27is27isitors’ter, 7800 Kirtland Chardon Road, Kirtland, OH. The American Bus Association has recognized the exhibit as one of the “To” 00 Events in North America.”
Finally, USA Today named the Legendary Lights of Historic Clifton Mill in Ohio one of the top 10 light displays in the country.
This Midwest Christmas town takes you back to the 1940s. The holiday display’s focal point is a light waterfall nestled among the Christmas Village and a decorated covered bridge. While in Historic Clifton, MI, visit the Clifton Opera House or tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s cottage
What is the most Christmassy Town in the Midwest?
I may be a bit biased since this city is in my state, but Frankenmuth, Michigan, is one of the top Christmassy towns in the Midwest.
Even better, it’s Christmas year-round, so you can visit during the off-season and still find plenty to do.
The Christmas season officially kicks off November 27, 2026, with skaNovember 27, a tree lighting ceremony, hot cocoa, and a drone show.
Throughout the season, visitors can also enjoy the musical Christmas tree, ice rink, light tour, and more.
Visit their website to get up-to-date information.
You’ll want to stop by B. Bronner’s Country Christmas Town.
Customers come from all over the world to experience the wonders at Bronner’s massive Christmas store, open 361 days a year.
It features more than 50,000 trims and gifts, while Christmas Lane is illuminated nightly.
What Midwest Town Feels Like a Hallmark Christmas Movie?
There are so many great contenders; my top favorites are Frankenmuth, Michigan, and Galena, Illinois.
Galena is quite charming during the holiday season because of its historic downtown and seasonal events.
On December 12, 2026, its NighDecember 12minaria and Living Windows event will illuminate downtown Galena, while additional December events include the Galena Holidaze Festival and Holiday Fire in the Sky.
Where is the Best Christmas Market in the Midwest?
One of the most established is Chicagoland’s Christmas market
The German-style outdoor Christmas market has been held in Chicago since 1996 and features international and local vendors, food, drinks, entertainment, and holiday shopping. Admission is free.
This one is on my bucket list for this year.
For this year, Christkindlmarket returns to three locations: Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago, Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville, and RiverEdge Park in Aurora.
The downtown Chicago market runs November 20-December 24, and the Michigan and Grand Rapids markets run November 20-December 24 if you prefer a closer-to-home Christmas market.
What are the best Christmas Towns in Michigan?
Besides Frankenmuth, which we have shared throughout this post, I would also add Holland, Grand Rapids, and Rochester.
Rochester should definitely be on your bucket list during the Christmas season for its lights alone.
The 2026 Big, Bright Light Show is scheduled to illuminate downtown Rochester from November 24, 2026 through November 24, 2027.
Detroit iJanuary 17great place to visit during the holiday season.
They offer a big Christmas experience, with downtown lights, ice skating, holiday markets, shopping, and seasonal activities centered around Campus Martius and Cadillac Square.
Where should I go for a Christmas weekend Getaway in the Midwest?
It will depend on what you want to do and how much time you have to drive. As stated before, we highly recommend Frankenmuth, Michigan.
Chicago is always a good idea, but especially during the Christmas season for the Christkindlmarket and other activities.
If you want cozy, Hallmark-movie vibes, head to Galena, Illinois, for seasonal events and a small-town setting.
If you have kids, add Indianapolis to the list. Their holiday attractions include Christmas at the Zoo, Circle of Lights, Winterlights at Newfields, a museum experience, and more.

What are the best Midwest Christmas Towns for Families?
Our family enjoyed our time in Indianapolis. Although we didn’t visit during the Christmas season, Indy is one of the top places for families to visit because of its many family-friendly activities and events.
During the Christmas season, the zoo offers Christmas at the Zoo. Learn more on their website.
I would also add Frankenmuth, Michigan, for one of the best Midwest Christmas vacations for families. Check out their current schedule and activities.
They recently opened a new and improved water resort, which will be great for some downtime after a busy day around town and seeing Santa and the Christmas village.
Santa Claus, Indiana, is another great spot for families to visit during the Christmas season, not only because of the town’s events but also because it has a huge Christmas store filled with great gift ideas and decor, plus a family-friendly amusement park, Holiday World.
Our boys loved the park, and we also enjoyed staying at the nearby campground, which has a list of holiday events.
Which Midwest Towns Have The Best Christmas Lights?
Rochester, Michigan, deserves a spot on the list because its Big, Bright Light Show transforms downtown during the holiday season.
For 2026, the display runs from November 24 through January 17, 2027.
Indianapolis also has several significant holiday light experiences, including Circle of Lights downtown, Winterlights at Newfields, and Christmas at the Zoo.
And don’t overlook Frankenmuth. Bronner’s Christmas Lane features more than 100,000 lights along a half-mile stretch and is illuminated every night from dusk until midnight.

Are Midwest Christmas Towns Worth Visiting For A Day Trip?
Absolutely, especially if you’re within a few hours of the destination. A day trip can give you enough time for holiday shopping, lunch or dinner, a Christmas market, and lights after dark.
For destinations with several attractions, however, I’d consider staying overnight. Frankenmuth, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Galena all have enough holiday activities, shopping, dining, and attractions to fill a weekend.
If you live in Michigan, I would recommend Detroit or Grand Rapids. But also, check out what’s happening in your local city!
What Should I Know Before Visiting A Christmas Town In The Midwest?
Check the town’s official event calendar before you leave. Christmas markets, parades, Santa visits, tree lightings, and special events don’t necessarily happen every day.
Also plan for crowds on December weekends, make restaurant and attraction reservations when available, and check parking or transportation options.
Frankenmuth, for example, offers a free seasonal shuttle Friday through Sunday through December 27, 2026, with multiple stops around town and additional free parking options.
And yes, prepare for Midwest weather. If you’re planning to walk through an outdoor Christmas market or spend an evening looking at lights, layers, gloves, comfortable shoes, and a weather check before leaving can make the experience much better.
